You must be at least 18 years old to fight in armor.
What equipment do I need for practice?
Your first practice you should bring a water bottle (optional), exercise clothing, and a cup/groin protection if needed. Private single stall changing rooms are available. Order of the Pegasus currently practices at the same time as the DFC men’s team. We use soft kit (foam sword, shield, and a helmet) during Tuesday and Wednesday practices. DFC provides those practice items, but people are encouraged to buy their own once they have decided they love buhurt.
Other recommended practice items:
Mouth guard
Tae Kwon Do style body protector
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) shin pads
Lacrosse gloves
Wresting shoes
Most of these items can be found at Play It Again Sports or eBay in slightly used condition for significantly less price than brand new.
*** If you are prone to joint injuries, it is recommended that you wear the appropriate brace / support after consulting with a medical professional. ***
What if I can’t make every practice?
We currently have 3 practices available each week. This is a hobby sport. Attend as many or as few practices each week as works for you. Obviously, the more you practice, the faster your skills will improve. However, we also understand that schedules vary and can be difficult to predict. We do not kick people off the team because of attendance.
Do I need to buy armor before joining?
Nope! In fact, we encourage you not to buy armor until after joining. Not all armor is made equal. Some armor is for decor only, renaissance festivals, or other sports. Buhurt, or armored combat, has specific armor requirements that need to be met for an individual to be eligible to participate in competition. Our coaches will help you order approved armor when you are ready to buy your own armor. Until then, the club has loaner armor available for rent for events, demoes and competitions. Groin protection is required for all fighters when in armor as safety is our top concern!
Is this expensive?
This sport can be expensive. Participating in events, tournaments, and demos are all optional. We encourage our members to do at least one big event per year. Local events are less expensive, but there are still gas, event costs, and any associated armor maintenance costs. For nonlocal events, travel costs should be considered (car, gas, hotel, flights, food, etc).
The initial cost of armor is high. The expected range can vary from about $1800-3000 for steel armor, and higher if you want titanium armor. Armor can be purchased piece by piece or as a kit. The routine costs of upkeep and care of your armor is much lower in comparison. Associated costs for WD-40 style lubricants, leather conditioner, broken or damaged leather straps and rivets are to be expected.
Can I do this even if I don’t consider myself athletic?
Yes, you can! If you have the passion or desire to participate in this sport, there is a place for you on this team. It is okay if you aren’t “athletic”. No one comes in being perfect. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. The more you practice the better you will get.
Only you and your doctor can determine that. Members of our team do have asthma and it doesn't stop them so it is possible.
Will I get hurt/injured?
Bruises are common in this sport. Expect to get them, and show off the cool ones!
Similar to other sports (basketball, volleyball, soccer, boxing, etc.) sprains, strains, and the occasional broken bone or torn ACL are possible. One of the more dangerous injuries possible is a concussion. We fall a lot in this sport which is accounted for in training.
What are MERCs?
Substitutes or “Mercs” are fighters that go to an event without a team and fill in available spots on other teams. Sometimes an entire team (5-8 fighters) cannot make an event and will ask Mercs to fill in the remaining spots. If you want to go to an event and the Pegasus team is not going, we will do our best to get you placed on a team for that event.
